Simpleshow on a Fire TV

A Fire TV Stick plugged into any TV makes it a Simpleshow screen. Install the app, type one code into your account, and the TV plays your channel from then on. It takes about five minutes.

1What you need

2Install the app

There are two ways. The first is the quickest, and it always works.

From a phone or computer
  1. Open Simpleshow on the Amazon Appstore, signed in to the same Amazon account as the Fire TV.
  2. Under Deliver to, choose your Fire TV.
  3. Click Get App. It installs on the TV by itself within a minute or two.
On the TV, with the remote
  1. On the home screen, go to Find (the magnifying glass) and choose Search.
  2. Type Simpleshow and pick it.
  3. Choose Get (or Download).
Not in the search results? Fire TV search can take a while to list a new app. Use the first way: it goes straight to the app's page.

3Open it

A new app does not always show up in the home screen's row of apps straight away. If you cannot see it there:

4Connect the TV to your channel

The first time it opens, the app shows Connect this TV and a six-character code.

Connect this TV K7P 4QX This code works for 10 more minutes.
What the TV shows. Your code will be different.
  1. On a phone or computer, sign in at simpleshow.app/console.
  2. Open the channel this TV should play and choose Put it on a TV (or open the Devices tab).
  3. Type the code from the TV and click Connect.

The TV starts playing the channel within a few seconds. From then on it goes straight to your show whenever the app opens: no code again.

Several TVs? Do the same on each one. Many TVs can play one channel, and they all change when you save. Give each a name with Rename on the Devices tab ("Booth left", "Lobby") so you can tell them apart.

5Put it first on the home screen

Once Simpleshow appears in the home screen's row of apps, move it to the front so it is one click away:

  1. Highlight Simpleshow in the row.
  2. Press the Options button on the remote (the one with three lines) and choose Move (on some models, Move to front).
  3. Slide it to the front and press the middle button to drop it there.

6Good to know

The power went off.
A Fire TV starts on Amazon's home screen. Open Simpleshow and it goes straight back to your channel, still connected. To have it come back on its own, see Start by itself after a power cut below.
The code ran out.
The TV gets a new one by itself. If it says to press OK, press the middle button on the remote for a fresh code.
It says "Could not reach Simpleshow" or "Waiting for the internet".
Check the TV's Wi-Fi. The app keeps trying and starts as soon as it is back. Once a show has played, it carries on from its saved copy through a short drop.
Does the TV go to sleep?
Not while Simpleshow is playing: the app keeps the screen on.
How do I leave the app?
Press Back twice, or press Home.
I want this TV on a different channel.
On the Devices tab of the channel it plays now, choose Disconnect. Within a couple of minutes the TV shows a new code; type it into the other channel.
No Fire TV?
A smart TV's own web browser works too: go to simpleshow.app/tv and type the code it shows the same way.

7Start by itself after a power cut (optional)

Out of the box, a Fire TV wakes up on Amazon's home screen and Simpleshow waits for somebody to open it. A TV out of reach can come back on its own instead. Fire TV only allows that with a permission it has no on-screen switch for, so it takes one command from a computer, once per TV. It is the same step every signage app on Fire TV uses.

  1. Make sure the TV has Simpleshow 1.0.7 or newer (the Appstore updates it by itself) and is connected to your channel.
  2. On the TV: Settings > My Fire TV > About, then click the TV's name seven times until it says you are a developer. Back in My Fire TV, open Developer Options and turn on ADB debugging.
  3. Note the TV's IP address: Settings > My Fire TV > About > Network.
  4. On a computer on the same Wi-Fi, install Google's free Android platform tools and run, with your TV's address in place of 192.168.1.50:
    adb connect 192.168.1.50:5555
The TV asks whether to allow the computer: choose Allow. Then run:
adb shell appops set app.simpleshow.tv SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW allow
  5. Open Simpleshow on the TV once. The channel's Devices tab now says starts by itself next to that TV.
  6. Turn ADB debugging off again. The permission stays.
Rather not? A Fire TV kit we set up for you arrives with this already done.
